"Thus art is not an object, but an experience." This volume collects the work of a generation of international "op artists" who were fascinated by the physical laws of light and optics, visual phenomena and the principles of perception. Op art, also known as optical art, is a style of visual art that makes use of optical illusions. "Optical art is a method of painting concerning the interaction between illusion and picture plane, between understanding and seeing." Op art works are abstract, with many of the better known pieces made in only black and white. When the viewer looks at them, the impression is given of movement, hidden images, flashing and vibration, patterns, or alternatively, of swelling or warping.

The Lenz Schönberg Collection focuses on monochrome paintings, Nouveau Réalisme, ZERO, kinetic art, concrete art, and arte programmata, thus documenting a late phase of Classic Modern Art that emerged and achieved coherency during the fifties and sixties. It includes major works by artists such as Lucio Fontana, Yves Klein, Piero Manzoni, Piero Dorazio, Jesús Raphael Soto, Jean Tinguely, Günther Uecker, Jef Verheyen, and Arman. The collection’s more than two hundred remarkable museum-quality works provide an exemplary record of the oeuvres of forty-four artists from twelve nations, art of truly European scope.
